A Simple Local Foods Recipe That All Kids Will Eat

If you're looking for a way to serve local foods year round and get kids in the kitchen, give this recipe from the National CACFP Sponsors Association a try. Purchase yogurt from an Iowa dairy such as Kalona Supernatural or Country View Dairy. If strawberry flavor is not available, simply substitute with vanilla. Both of these brands are creditable in the CACFP because they contain less than 23 grams of sugar per 6 oz serving.

Use fresh, local berries during the summer or freeze them for use during the winter.

Top off the parfait with local granola, such as O'Brien's Own Gourmet Granola, which is produced in Center Point, IA and is made from Iowa-grown oats and sweetened with Iowa honey.

Involve children in the preparation of their snack by setting up the ingredients on a table or counter and letting the children assemble their own parfait.

Each parfait credits for 1 serving of meat/meat alternate and 1 serving of fruit in the CACFP.
