4 Ways to Celebrate 5-2-1-0 in October

September is nearly halfway over, so it's time to start looking ahead to October. It’s all about 5-2-1-0! Whether your child care site is new to 5-2-1-0 or already registered and ready for more, there are a variety of ways your staff and students can make “Healthy Choices Count!” during the month of October.

October is Healthiest State Month and throughout the month we will celebrate healthy habits, culminating in the 5-2-1-0 Healthy Choices Count! Summit on October 22 at Des Moines University. Child care providers are invited to attend and learn how to make the healthy choice the easy choice for staff and students at their site.

5-2-1-0 represents the healthy habits we should strive for everyday:

  • 5 or more fruits or vegetables

  • 2 hours or less of recreational screen time

  • 1 hour or more of physical activity

  • 0 sugary drinks - drink more water!

Here’s how you can celebrate 5-2-1-0 in October:

1. Download a Healthiest State Month Toolkit

Get ready for the 5-2-1-0 Healthy Choices Count! Summit by celebrating Healthiest State Month. Each week in the month of October will be dedicated to a different individual number in 5-2-1-0. Download a free, interactive toolkit that includes a full schedule of events, participation ideas, social media posts, and take-home information for families.

2. Use fun 5-2-1-0 Healthy Choices Count! activity sheets

These activity sheets, appropriate for children aged Pre-K–2nd grade, are themed around the 5-2-1-0 healthy habits and include educational components and color-in sections. Print them out and use them at your child care site in October and year-round:

3. Attend the 5-2-1-0 Healthy Choices Count! Summit

Iowans from a variety of sectors – including schools, health care sites, early-care and out-of-school programs – are invited to the 5-2-1-0 Healthy Choices Count! Summit. Attendees will learn how to create sustainable, impactful change through expert speakers, interactive breakout sessions and community panels.

Registration is now open at IowaHealthiestState.com/Summit. Registration is $30 and includes the full-day program and lunch. (You can find a full agenda, speaker descriptions and information on available continuing education credits online.) The 5-2-1-0 Summit is a great opportunity to learn from other early child care providers from across the state who have similar wellness goals for their children.

4. Register your site to keep the momentum going

Don’t stop the focus on healthy habits after October is over. Sign-up to become a 5-2-1-0 Registered Site to join an important network of sectors working towards healthier environments where young Iowans live, learn, and play. Becoming a 5-2-1-0 Registered Site ensures your site will be recognized at state-level presentations, get access to an exclusive 5-2-1-0 newsletter, and makes your site eligible to apply for a future Healthiest State Annual Award.
