If you work with children 5 years of age and younger, you probably already know that active play is important. But how much active play time do they need each day? What does "physical activity" for this age group look like?
In November, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services released the Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans, 2nd edition which provides guidance for preschool-aged children (3-5 years) to engage in physical activity.
Key guidelines include:
Preschool-aged children should be physically active throughout the day to enhance growth and development. Shoot for 3 hours a day!
Adult caregivers of preschool-aged children should encourage active play that includes a variety of activity types.
Tips for engaging kids in active play:
Participate with children by joining children in ball play, dancing, yoga, stepping, active games, and other fitness activities.
Have children act out a story while you read it.
Make a chart for tracking physical activity. Have children place a sticker or stamp by their name every time they participate in active play.
Throw a dance party or make up an obstacle course
Use transition time to get children moving. (marching, skipping, hopping).
